From Singapore to London to Tokyo, the famous ‘Circle Line’ has transformed the way people move in cities. Soon, Malaysia’s MRT3 Circle Line will bring the same benefits. It provides commuters with alternative routes, reducing reliance on the main central hub for transfers.
So what is the Circle Line? It is an orbital rail line connecting the existing train network and aims to connect more places, ease travel for the ever growing population in the Klang Valley. It will be 51 kilometres around the city perimeter and integrated with 10 interchanges.
With its humble beginnings in 2011, MRT started with MRT1 (Kajang Line) and MRT2 (Putrajaya Line) and now The Circle Line, officially known as MRT3. The Circle Line is now in its advanced planning stages and is targeted to complete around 2030.
Of MRT Corp’s four main thrusts, one that stands out is the Circle Line’s role in improving alignment and optimising connectivity to underserved areas, in line with the KL Local Plan 2040. It aims to spur urban rejuvenation along its route, create a new multi-modal hub in the north of Kuala Lumpur City Centre, and open up greater access to Inner Ampang Jaya — while driving a high value-added economy and delivering long-lasting residual value.
In anticipation of this, the effects will be far-reaching — from driving socio-economic growth and cultivating a highly skilled workforce, to boosting the property market and enhancing connectivity and mobility through greener, smarter travel solutions.
Socioeconomic Growth
More jobs creation will take place, from highly skilled to TVET skill developments. With the footfall increasing at new stops, businesses will enjoy robust business with travellers commuting in these new stops created by the Circle Line.
Greener & Smarter Travel
With it linking multiple MRT and LRT lines, whether you live in the suburbs there will be seamless connectivity, less crowd, faster journey and more people opting for train travel comparatively to cars, therefore leading to lower carbon emission. With public transportation upgraded, it will promote greener travel within the city.
Boosting businesses & property
It is a chain effect, higher demand for homes near stations, and new investment opportunities along the route. According to TheEdge, based on an interview with a local market expert certain areas has been highlighted to be beneficial due to its close proximity to the Circle Line, such as Mont Kiara, Sri Hartamas, Dutamas, Setapak, Ampang, Pantai Dalam, Jalan Klang Lama, Universiti and the Bangsar South area.
With the upcoming Circle Line, the advantages clearly outweigh the drawbacks. Properties adjacent to or near the line are set to reap long-term benefits, as demand for homes with seamless access to public transport and key amenities continues to rise. Inevitably, prices will adjust upward, rewarding those who invest early in these prime locations. Let's observe and see the outcome.
